Route Maps
I explained in an earlier posting that I carried a GPS receiver with me on the ride which I used to build up a record of the exact route that we took. Here at last is the result.
Land's End to John O'Groats (986 miles)
The map above shows the entire route. Click on the link below the map for a full screen version. Beware that this takes a long time to load, and may overwhelm your browser (it's better with Firefox than Internet Explorer).
Almost all the route is taken directly from the GPS track I recorded, though for a few short sections when the battery went flat or I forgot to switch it on I have filled in the gaps manually using my memory of the route we took and an online route-mapping tool. The original GPS track had a huge number of data points and I have had to reduce the level of detail to allow it to be displayed. More detail is available in the day-by-day maps which follow.
I have also created maps showing the route I took each day and added them to the day-by-day trip reports. In general these are constructed using the raw GPS data. If you click the links below each map for the larger version you can see every wrong turn we took, exactly where we stopped for lunch each day, exactly where we stayed each night and the exact route I took to walk to the fruit section at the back of Morrison's in Market Drayton. Occasionally gaps appear in the route, especially the full-screen version. If you get these, try refreshing the page.
